White House Aims To Fill 500,000 Cybersecurity Jobs With New Hiring Initiative

Table of Contents

According to the White House, there are about 500,000 open Cybersecurity jobs in the United States. That’s half a million positions waiting to be filled!

To address this big need, the White House Office of the National Cyber Director (ONCD) has teamed up with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to launch a new program called Service for America.1

This initiative is all about recruiting, hiring, and engaging more people in Cybersecurity roles.

Service For America Program Overview

Service for America is a program that works with the OMB and OPM to connect people with jobs in Cybersecurity, Technology, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

According to National Cyber Director Harry Coker Jr., “Many Americans do not realize that a cyber career is available to them. There is a perception that you need a computer science degree and a deeply technical background to get a job in cyber. The truth is, cyber jobs are available to anyone who wants to pursue them.”

That said, cyber professionals come from many different backgrounds and fields, and there’s a place for everyone in this growing field.

As part of the National Cyber Workforce and Education Strategy (NCWES), they are promoting best practices to make cyber jobs accessible to people from all backgrounds across the country.

New Strategies To Boost Cybersecurity Skills

In July 2023, the White House introduced a National Cyber Workforce and Education Strategy to help close the skills gap. This effort is part of a broader national Cybersecurity strategy aimed at strengthening the nation’s ability to prevent and handle Cyberattacks.

In August 2024, Coker visited the College of Southern Nevada to encourage more students to train in Cybersecurity.

The White House has shared links to upcoming events, job fairs, and programs running through mid-September to October 2024. You can also find information about federal internships, apprenticeships, and other federal job opportunities.

The need for skilled Cybersecurity professionals is a challenge, but it’s also a great opportunity for many people. These jobs provide well-paying and important careers for Americans from all walks of life, including veterans, military spouses, single parents, career changers, and those living in rural areas.
