In this newsflash episode of The Cybersecurity Insider, host Yigal Behar dives into an urgent update for Google Chrome.

Learn more about what it’s all about in this podcast.

Urgent Update for Chrome

Yigal understands the gravity of the situation, revealing that Google has released an emergency patch due to a zero-day vulnerability exploited in the wild. This means there’s a security flaw in Chrome that hackers are actively using. Yigal explains that the vulnerability was discovered recently and poses a great risk to users.

Yigal continues explaining that this vulnerability isn’t just theoretical—hackers are actively exploiting it to gain access to data and information on computers running Chrome. He illustrates how simply browsing a website can expose users to this threat. The way the Chrome engine renders web pages can inadvertently provide an opening for attackers to seize control of a computer.

Probing deeper into the issue, Yigal reads from a statement released by Chrome. It details a stable version with a patch aimed at addressing the vulnerability. This patch, released on March 25th, is identified as CVE-2022-1096 and categorized as a “type confusion” issue in V8.

Interestingly, this flaw was reported by an anonymous individual, which shows the collaborative effort involved in cybersecurity.

Google Releases Emergency Patch for Chrome

Yigal points out that Google has urged users to install this patch promptly, labeling it as “critical high.” This designation underscores the importance of updating Chrome as quickly as possible to protect against the vulnerability.

He finds it noteworthy that Google issued this patch independently, rather than bundling it with other updates as is often the case. The urgency and severity of the situation prompted Google to release this patch immediately, ensuring users can safeguard their systems without delay. Yigal praises this swift action, seeing it as an exemplary practice in prioritizing user security.

Yigal reveals that this vulnerability isn’t confined to Chrome alone. Microsoft has confirmed that its Edge browser, which shares some underlying technology with Chrome, also suffers from the same vulnerability. He advises Edge users to urgently update their browsers to version 99.0.1150.55, which is not susceptible to this flaw.

This shows that the problem is big and affects both Chrome and Edge. We don’t know exactly what the problem is, but it’s really important to fix it quickly.

In light of this, Yigal issues a direct call to action to his listeners: as soon as you finish listening to his podcast, you should update your Chrome browsers immediately.

Update Your Chrome

Yigal offers a quick tutorial on how to update Chrome. He instructs them to click on the three dots in the top right corner of the browser, then select “Help” followed by “About Google Chrome.”

This will open a screen where Chrome checks for updates. Once the update is installed, a prompt to relaunch Chrome will appear. Yigal clarifies that restarting the computer isn’t necessary—simply relaunching the browser is enough to apply the update.

Concluding the podcast, Yigal reiterates the urgency of updating both Chrome and Microsoft Edge. He urges listeners to prioritize this task and update their browsers as soon as possible.
